A manufacturer responded with this comment:

I would have the messaging tell the customer to always uncrate packaging and inspect for product freight damage. We have instances whereby the packaging is not damaged, or at least not to the eye, then once uncrated the customer finds damage.

With all the various types of crating materials and methods, crating should always be removed at time of delivery. We use this messaging on our crating to ensure it is understood.
